Arrival in Granada:
To save time and money for another night at the hotel, we took the night express from Barcelona and reached Granada early in the morning.
In Granada I booked the Hotel Granada Center for one night. The accommodation is characterized by its excellent location. Both the train station and the sights of the city can be reached in a few minutes on foot.
In addition, a rich and delicious breakfast buffet is included in the price.
The Alhambra:
Granada's main attraction, the Alhambra, is about a 20-minute walk from the hotel. The Alhambra is an important castle located on Sabikah Hill. It is one of the most visited sights in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
Due to the high demand, tickets for a visit or guided tour should be reserved in advance.
The history of the fortress is long and eventful. Its origins date back to pre-Roman times, around the 10th century. Extensive restoration work has been taking place since the 19th century, some of which continues to the present day.
The Alhambra is a great place to visit, especially during the spring and early summer months when everything is in bloom.
The diverse and colorful planting with the water features is simply wonderful. It fits beautifully in the gardens between the historic buildings.
Much of the gardens at the Alhambra derive from Arabic culture. Partly for this reason, water is used as a refreshing stylistic device in large parts of the facility. This gives the fortress its special, unique appeal.
The element of water can also be found in the Court of the Lions, which was built by Mohammed V in the 16th century. The fountain, with its basin supported by 12 lions, gives the courtyard its name.
The water was not only used for the fountain, but also for watering the plants in the Court of the Lions.
Arguably the best and most beautiful view of Granada is from the gardens along the ramparts. It is worth staying here for a few minutes and enjoying the panorama.
The old town of Granada:
In addition to visiting the Alhambra, you should definitely walk through the old town of Granada.
In the streets there are many small shops and historic buildings. There are also numerous special churches in Granada that invite you to visit or pray.
The cobbled streets planted with orange trees and the small shops ensure a relaxing atmosphere and an entertaining stay.
The next morning, we continued our journey by train to Córdoba. Traveling by train in Spain is comfortable and inexpensive.
Conclusion:
You can easily spend several days in Granada. Visiting the Alhambra and the old town in one day is relatively tight.
Nevertheless, the stopover was worth it and Granada was an interesting contrast to the modern metropolis of Barcelona.
